Build your first AI tool in 20 minutes

Time: 20 minutes. You need: a free account on Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, and a notes app. Cost: $0. No sign-up with us.

What you’ll build

A weekly planner you can reuse every week. Paste in what’s on, and it gives you:

  • your top three priorities
  • a realistic plan for each day
  • what to drop, delay or hand to someone else

The difference from an ordinary chat: you write your instructions once, on an instruction card, and reuse them. That’s what turns AI from a chat into a tool.

Privacy habit: never paste passwords, ID numbers, bank details or other people’s private information into an AI. Write “dentist” or “client call”, not names or addresses. And check your assistant’s Settings: unless you switch it off, your chats may be used to train its AI.

Step 1: Write your card (8 minutes)

Copy this into your notes app and fill in every bracket. Change the numbers in RULES to suit you.

WEEKLY PLANNER CARD

You are my weekly planner. Each week I'll paste what's on, and you'll
turn it into a realistic plan.

ABOUT MY WEEK
- Busy hours: [e.g. work Mon–Fri, 9 to 5 / volunteering Tue and Thu]
- Best focus time: [e.g. mornings before 11]
- Non-negotiables: [e.g. school run at 8; gym Tue and Thu; Friday night off]
- This month's main goal: [e.g. finish the shop's stock order / walk 5 km
  three times a week]

WHEN I PASTE MY WEEK
1. If something important is missing, like a deadline or how long a task
takes, ask me in one short message first.
2. Then reply with:
   A. Top 3 priorities, one line each.
   B. A short plan for each day, keeping my non-negotiables and putting
focus work in my best time.
   C. What to drop, delay or hand to someone else, and why.
3. Keep it short enough to read on a phone.

RULES
- No more than 5 hours of focused work in a day.
- Leave 30 minutes of slack each day for surprises.
- Never invent appointments or deadlines I didn't give you.

Step 2: Try it (5 minutes)

Open a new chat in any of the three assistants. Paste your whole card, then your week, for example:

Here's my week: dentist Tuesday 3 pm; client report due Thursday; about
2 hours of email a day; family dinner Saturday; I'd like to start running.

Does the plan respect your non-negotiables? Is it realistic?

Step 3: Test it (5 minutes)

Two quick tests:

  1. The vague test: in a new chat, paste the card and then just Plan my week. It should ask what’s on, not invent a week.
  2. The change test: after a plan, reply The report will take 3 hours longer. It should rearrange the days around it, not start from scratch.

If a test fails, don’t start over: add one rule to your card, such as “If I change one thing, adjust the plan around it and keep the rest,” and try again. Test, fix, retest: that’s how good AI tools get built.

Step 4: Keep it (2 minutes)

Your card is now a tool. Next week, open a new chat, paste the card, then your week.

If your assistant can save instructions (a Project in ChatGPT or Claude, or a Gem or skill in Gemini), you can paste the card in once instead. Menus change, but the card in your notes always works. Hit a limit? Paste your card into another assistant and carry on.

What you just learned

  • A card turns a chat into a tool. Write your rules once; reuse them every week.
  • Tests show where it breaks, and one new rule fixes it.
  • Privacy comes first, every time you paste.

Want to build more?

This was a small first tool. In Capstone AI Lab, you build 12 real tools in 12 weeks, one a week, from written step-by-step lessons that work on the free plans of Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. No live classes: you go at your own pace.

The first build, Tool 01: your personal trip planner, takes today’s idea further: a full traveller profile, five fixed sections (itinerary, budget table, packing list, what to check before booking) and three tests that make it reliable. Later builds include a meal planner, an email reply assistant, a website, a WhatsApp helper and a voice receptionist you can try in a browser.

Founding membership starts on 21 October 2026: the first 100 members lock AI Lab Pro at $19.90/month for life, and you can cancel any time. See what’s included.

Stuck on this one? Ask Enoch, our AI mentor, for example: “My weekly planner keeps inventing meetings. What rule should I add?”
